New Year, new beginnings

Today I was challenged to write a New Year poem with evocative imagery on the theme of new beginnings. So I wrote this for my mum who sadly died in 2017 and never got to meet my husband, whom I married in 2020.

To my mother

An old man now, the dying year
Lowers the latch and locks the door,
Then throws the key, with one last tear
Where none can find it any more.

Another year is boarded up,
Banished, and wrenched from my embrace.
Seven such doors have clattered shut
Since last I saw you face to face.

But oh, I wish that you could see,
Beyond those seven shuttered gates,
A new companion walks with me
Onwards, to where our future waits.
